In 2021 two employees came up with the idea to purchase a completed building in Henderson which was on the market as a mortgagee sale - the Nido building as it was known, was a 27,000m2 retail furniture outlet conveniently situated close to Auckland's Northwestern motorway.
Significant changes had to be made to the internals of the building, including the removal of a large portion of a mezzanine concrete floor to facilitate a double height factory area, the addition of a new glazed facade and rooflight to the upper level to introduce more natural light into the interior, the conversion of the atrium into a welcoming entrance and training space as well as the installation of 969m2 solar panel grid achieving 220kW for essential services backup. Thermosash also developed, manufactured and installed a new unitised glazed partition suite for their offices on the upper level.
Sustainability was at the forefront of the adaptive project from the planning stages to demolition, construction and the move from two premises into one - positive methodologies such as reuse, recycling and responsible disposal were incorporated and have been carried over into the operational management of the new premises.
Thermosash specialises in engineered prefabrication of unitised facade suites and envelope elements, and due to the large factory space available took the opportunity to invest in new state of the art manufacturing and CNC equipment enabling greater precision, speed, innovation and productivity.
The new premises is the launching pad for the next 50 years in the specific design building envelope industry - Thermosash has the people, manufacturing capacity and experienced know how to help create and build sustainable futures for the next generation.
