University of Canterbury - Tupuārangi Accommodation

Project Overview

UOC Tupuārangi is an eight-storey student accommodation facility for the University of Canterbury providing modern tech-savvy living. The two main buildings are linked with a bridge and form a U-shape around a recreational ground floor courtyard.  Catering, study spaces and shared lounges have been designed to facilitate socialising, safety and wellbeing.

Thermosash was engaged to deliver part of the facade solution, our facade systems include:

  • Thermosash PW1000-TB160 thermally broken unitised curtainwall system across the main façades, integrating fixed glazing, opening sashes and folded aluminium feature panels in four distinct colours.
  • The unitised curtainwall interfaces with hinged ground floor doors, automated entry doors, plank cladding at Level 7
  • Thermosash DS-50TB thermally broken punch windows with opening sashes to link bridge facade

The project was required to meet a very short construction programme to ensure completion in time for student occupancy. To achieve this, Thermosash implemented a streamlined design-to-manufacture workflow and adopted a staged production and installation strategy. Early procurement, detailed planning and close coordination with site sequencing enabled manufacturing and installation activities to progress efficiently despite supply chain pressures and programme constraints. The use of a unitised curtainwall system also assisted in accelerating installation on site while maintaining quality control and reducing programme risk.
