Ashburton Civic Centre & Library

Project Overview

The Ashburton Civic Centre and Library, Te Whare Whakatere, is a state-of-the-art sustainable building with a building management system that monitors the LED lighting system, solar shading and energy use.  It has been built with an engineered timber superstructure reinforced with post-tensioned steel cables and brackets which will ensure the building is able to rock during an earthquake and settle back in place.  A heritage listed building, Pioneer Hall, has been preserved inside the children's library.

The entrance to the building showcases a steel and aluminium mesh screen engineered, manufactured and installed by Thermosash - it is an architectural tribute to the agricultural / dairy industry designed to resemble a silo or stainless diary tank with an opening styled as an A (for Ashburton).

Building envelope solutions by Thermosash include:

  • PW1000 Glazed Unitised Curtainwall
  • Delta Aluminium Suite Windows
  • Glazed Sliding and Hinged Doors
  • Glazed Skylight
  • Vertical & Horizontal Solar shading
  • Steel/Aluminium feature Screen to front entrance

The building was awarded excellence in the 'Sustainable Building Property Award' by the Property Council New Zealand.
